Wednesday, November 21, 2001

POPLAR BLUFF -- Sikeston's wrestling team opened the 2001 season with an impressive 49-27 win over Poplar Bluff Tuesday. The Bulldogs won seven of the 14 matches by pinfall and had to forfeit just one weight division.

"I thought we really wrestled really well for the first match of the year," said Sikeston coach Chris Hodgkiss. "Not everybody is set in their weight class, but we're going to be pretty solid from top to bottom. We don't really have a weak area."

At 103, Sikeston's Jeremy Freeman pinned Bluff's Eddy merchant in 1:09. Sikeston's Cody Ryan lost by pin to Bluff's Mat Boyers in 1:34 in the 112 division.

At 119, Sikeston's Adam Miller pinned Bluff's Chris Clinton in 1:15. Sikeston's Kyle Weeks pinned Kevin Richman in 3:41 in the 125 class. At 130, Cleveland Anthony won a 20-7 decision over Bluff's Patrick Krishna.

At 135, Sikeston's Cody Weeks pinned Bluff's Brett Calvin in 5:31. At 140, Sikeston's Justin Keller lost to Bluff's Austin Lampe by a score of 11-8. At 145, Sikeston's Jonathan Cartner was pinned by Bluff's Ryan Godwin in 1:07.

Sikeston had to forfeit to Poplar Bluff's Tyler Berry in the 152 class. At 160, Sikeston's Scotty Keenan defeated Bluff's Chris Cookson, 7-5.

"When we did lose, the very next guy seemed to step it up and get us back on the winning track," said Hodgkiss. "I thought this was a really good team effort from top to bottom."

In the 171 class, Sikeston's Ross Merideth defeated Bluff's Ben Black in 1:11.

At 189, Sikeston's Scott Heuiser pinned Bluff's Jessie LeGrand in just 43 seconds. Sikeston's Stewart Carraway then pinned Bluff's Justin Stewart in 38 seconds in the 125 class.

In the heavyweight division, Sikeston's Joe Johnson was pinned by Bluff's Tyler Bader in 57 seconds.

Sikeston (1-0) will get tested next Wednesday as the Bulldogs travel to Farmington. The Knights are two-time defending state champions, and have been ranked No. 1 this season. "They will be a test," said Hodgkiss. "It will definitely tell us right where we're at."

Sikeston lost Tuesday's junior varsity match, 39-30. Sikeston winners were Max Hampton (112), Josh Holmes (119), Daniel Klimmeck (125), Shay Max (135), and Dennis Butler (140).
