Troy L. Wilson announced Thursday evening The First National Bank in Sikeston will be known as Montgomery Bank effective May 3.
SIKESTON - When it comes to changing the name of the bank, Joel A. Montgomery Sr. paraphrased William Shakespeare.

"A rose by any other name will smell as sweet," the founder and chairman emeritus told those gathered Thursday evening at what is now the Montgomery Bank. "A name change is not significant."

Troy Wilson, chief executive officer, agreed. The name is changed but nothing else he said as he announced that effective May 3 the bank's present 11 locations will be known as Montgomery Bank. The name change will bring all banking locations under one name and celebrates the leadership of Montgomery.

"This is an exciting time for our employees, customers and the communities we serve," said Wilson. "This name change allows all of our locations to represent the same identity and brand."

Previously the bank was known as Montgomery First National Bank in the St. Louis metro area and The First National Bank in Southeast Missouri. "This change removes any duplication in our marketing efforts and allows our employees to feel unified. Finally, it is an all-together fitting tribute to the Montgomery family and the many contributions they have made to the communities that we serve," said Wilson.

During Thursday evening's announcement, which came at a social gathering for the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce, Wilson pointed out former and current board members and the bank's employees. He noted Montgomery Bank is the largest privately owned, family operated bank in Missouri and one of Southeast Missouri's largest employers.

Currently with assets of $600 million, Wilson added, the bank has plans to continue growing. He insisted all of the Montgomery Banks will continue to offer personal service and put the customer first.

"We're excited about the new opportunities that lie before us and we hope our customers and friends share in our excitement. We have long enjoyed the relationships we have fostered with the communities that we serve and look forward to building upon those great relationships," Wilson said.

In the bank's news release announcing the change, the CEO described the name change as a way "to differentiate ourselves in a sea of 'First somethings.' We were the First National Bank and I suppose as an institution we should be flattered that everyone has tried to follow in our footsteps. Frankly, all of them can't be first no matter what they call themselves."

Headquartered in Sikeston, Montgomery Bank also has locations in Cape Girardeau, Chaffee, Jackson and Miner in Southeast Missouri and six locations in the metro St. Louis area that include Affton, Bridgeton, Chesterfield, Crestwood, South County, and St. Louis Hills.
