Poplar Bluff wins NMCCMS tourney

NEW MADRID -- Charleston defeated New Madrid County Central Middle School in the third place game of the NMCCMS seventh grade basketball tournament on Thursday, 43-30.

NMCCMS (1-2) was led in scoring by Dontrey Washington's eight points. Washington was named to the all-tournament team.

"I was very impressed with the guys tonight," said NMCCMS coach Keith Sapp. "They showed a lot of enthusiasm and hustle. At this level, it's not all about winning. It's about learning fundamentals and how to run an offense."

Other NMCCMS scorers were Tommy Rowe (6), DeAnton Brown (5), Daren Robinson (4), Michael Brown (3), John Carlisle (2) and DeAndre Hicks (2). Moore led Charleston with 13 points.

In the championship game, Poplar Bluff defeated Mayfield 47-37. Poplar Bluff's leading scorer was Rusty Bryant with 22. Adam Shelton paced Mayfield with 19.

NMCCMS will travel to Poplar Bluff next Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
