Sikeston is playing host this week to the Hooters Professional Golf Tour as the National Golf Association event makes its return to our community. The professional golf event is sponsored locally by Health Facilities Rehab Center and features professional golfers from around the country competing for a share of the $145,000 purse.
The events began earlier in the week but the real competition got under way this morning as the pros began competing head-to-head. Some of the future stars of the Professional Golf Association tour got their start on the Hooters tour so this event gives area residents an opportunity to see some top quality golf. And the event is free to the public.
The fine folks at Health Facilities should be commended for sponsoring this year's event. Planning and coordinating a massive tournament takes hours of preparation and scores of volunteers. And despite Tuesday's hottest day of the year, the weather seems to be cooperating as well.
The Bootheel Golf Club is the host site and head pro Jeff Ketterman and his staff have done an excellent job of assuring a quality event for players and spectators alike. The hospitality is second to none and the course is in excellent shape for professional competition. All in all, it gives our community a chance to shine for one special week.
Name me one other community our size that brings in professional golf in July and professional rodeo in August? You'll have to look long and hard to find an answer to that question.
Sikeston residents need to turn out the welcome mat this week and put our best foot forward. Believe me, the reputation from the hospitality here will be carried by these young professionals in the weeks ahead. We need to provide them with something special to remember.
