NEW MADRID - The New Madrid County 4H Club Fair concluded a two-day 15th annual session Thursday after county winners were chosen to take part in the district fair at Dexter Aug. 5. The County 4H Fair brought out 361 exhibits on which 239 blue ribbons, 89 red ribbons and 33 white ribbons were awarded. A chicken barbecue was held in the afternoon in the cafeteria with Randolph Kem as master of ceremonies.

SIKESTON - Softball fans gathered Sunday afternoon for the charity softball game between the local media and Sikeston Department of Public Safety, which proved to be a "comedy of errors." More than $500 was raised for the Sikeston Regional Children's Service and Sikeston Rescue Squad. After playing in the summer heat and being drenched by rainfall, the public safety officers beat the media, 18-11.

SIKESTON - Michael Hilburn, a resident of West Gladys Street, calls his 8-month-old Burmese Python a "big baby," and was recently seen "walking" Victor along Kingshighway. The pet is currently 7-feet-long with the potential of reaching 21 feet and a weight of 165 pounds. Stating Victor is licensed, Hilburn says he feeds his pet a diet of rats, mice, squirrel or any type of rodent every 14 days.


SIKESTON - Instructor Shana Burton helped some youngsters taking swimming lessons at the Jaycee Municipal Swimming Pool. Some of her students are: Megan White, Sarah Bedwell and Caleb Abbers.
