POPLAR BLUFF -- Jackson running back Mario Whitney was awarded the Carr Trophy on Wednesday night, a trophy given each year to the top high school football player in Southeast Missouri.
Whitney led the Indians to the Class 5A semifinals this season, rushing for 2,782 yards. This season he broke the state record for rushing yards in a game with 463 and fell just five touchdowns short of the state record for TDs in a season.
The Poplar Bluff Letterman's Club also named the Lineman of the Year awards, for the top lineman in each of the three divisions of the SEMO Conference.
Hayti's Charles Gaines (6-1, 305) won the SEMO South, NMCC's Chad Nolen (6-3, 250) won the SEMO Central, and Jackson's Travis Dambach (6-6, 275) won the SEMO North.
