NMCCMS wins season opener

MORLEY -- Both New Madrid County Central Middle School basketball teams opened the 2001 season with wins over Scott Central on Tuesday night.

The NMCCMS eighth graders beat the Braves 49-38 behind a 21 point performance from Dontrey Washington, and a 17 point effort from DeAnton Brown.

Shamar Davis provided six points for the Eagles. D'Andre Hicks, Tommy Rowe and Darrin Robinson each contributed two.

"This was our first game, and I was proud of the way we played," said coach Keith Sapp. "We've still got some work to do on fundamentals and we're going to get to that today in practice."

The team will host a seventh grade tournament on Tuesday. Poplar Bluff will face Charleston at 6 p.m., followed by Mayfield, Ky., versus NMCC at 7:30.

In Tuesday's eighth grade game, NMCCMS defeated the Braves 53-38. Terrance Smith led the charge with 20 points, followed by Jordan Kimball with 16 and Newsom with 14.

Other scorers were Terrard Long (2), Bruce Howard (6), Rudolopho Johnson (3), Rakhim Smith (2), T.J. Bevly (3), Marcus Anderson (2), Justin Ruedrich (3), and Antonio (8). The eighth grade team will compete in the South Pemiscot Tournament starting Tuesday.
