Kmart Corp., headquartered in Troy, Mich., will not confirm the accuracy of the list. The Detroit Free Press originally stated in its Feb. 2 issue that the list was reported by American City Business Journals, and in its Feb. 12 issue, the newspaper referred to the list as "a list of unknown origin."
Sikeston Kmart Assistant Manager Lisa Kolwyck said she was unable to comment on the situation, but a Kmart Corp. representative said, "Unless it's from Kmart's Web site or a public announcement made by Kmart Corp., don't believe the reports from the radio, television or newspapers."
No specific numbers of store closings have been determined, the Kmart Corp. representative said. However, when Kmart Corp. has information about store closures, the company will inform its associates and then make a public announcement, he said.
The Kmart Corp. representative said the public should check Kmart's official Web site for any accurate information concerning store closures. Kmart's Web site is available at www.bluelight.com.
