Local woman will celebrate 90th birthday

Tuesday, July 13, 2004

BEMENT -- Veatrice Pauline Shepard will be guest of honor from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Bement Baptist Church Family Life Center, where her children will host a reception for her 90th birthday. Her children are James Shepard of Town Creek, Ala., Gene Shepard of Katy, Texas, and Sharon Koppock of Atlanta.

Born July 24, 1914, in Winston County, Ala., she is the firstborn child of the late Essie and Newton Taylor.

When she was 15 years old, her family moved to New Madrid County. She married the Rev. Norman Shepard in October 1933 and they primarily lived in Mississippi County, where he was a Baptist minister for more than 50 years. Although most of her life has been devoted to her family and supporting her husband's ministry, Mrs. Shepard has always enjoyed, and still practices, gardening, cooking, crocheting and listening to music. In the 1960s and 1970s, she was a practicial nurse for more than nine years at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston as well as for private patients.

Mrs. Shepard, who also has five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, is the sister of Lorene Shepard of New Madrid, Doloris Lingle of East Prairie and Emma Lou Poppe of East St. Louis, Ill.
