SIKESTON - Area law enforcement officials have another
reason to give thanks this Thanksgiving. No major
problems were reported by area sheriff and police
departments during Thursday's holiday.
However, there were several holiday accidents,
including one that killed a Kansas man and injured
four passengers.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports the accident
occurred at 9:02 a.m. Thursday on Interstate 55, one
mile south of New Madrid, when 48-year-old David Jones
of Topeka fell asleep at the wheel of his southbound
vehicle.
The vehicle then ran off the left side of the roadway
and into the median.
The front seat passenger then grabbed the steering
wheel, causing the vehicle to reenter the roadway and
continue traveling into the ride road ditch,
overturning in a field.
Jones was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sustaining moderate injuries were Wayne Jordan, 55,
who was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape
Girardeau and Lisa Bush, 25, who was taken to Missouri
Delta Medical Center in Sikeston; Kierra Wright, 6,
who was ejected from the vehicle and sustained serious
injuries; and Zytaya Bush, 7, whose injuries were
minor and was taken to Missouri Delta Medical Center
in Sikeston.
All were from Topeka.
