SIKESTON -- The death of a baby in September has led to the arrest of a Sikeston woman.
According to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, Latoya Marie Fletcher, 21, has been arrested and formally charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action through the Scott County Prosecutor's office.
The arrest stems from an incident that occurred on Sept. 17. At approximately 7:19 a.m., officers with Sikeston DPS were called to the 300 block of Alabama. Upon officers arrival, they found five-month old Octavia Nyshae Clark, not breathing. At the scene, officers performed CPR on Clark who was later transported to Missouri Delta Medical Center. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to reports, Fletcher, who was of no relation to the deceased infant, was spending the night with Clark's mother on Sept. 16. At 1 a.m., the infant was put to bed by her mother and sleeping normally. However, the baby was not breathing at 7:15 a.m. when her mother tried to wake him.
During their investigation, officers did find a trash bag on the floor next to the baby's bed prompting a criminal investigation.
The officers' investigation led them to Fletcher, who on Wednesday night confessed to murdering the infant.
