PORTAGEVILLE - The Portageville Bulldogs basketball team improved to 10-2 on the season with an impressive 61-44 win over Bootheel Conference rival Caruthersville.
Portageville jumped out to a 15-7 first quarter lead and extended that to a 35-19 halftime lead.
"It's a good win because it's a conference game," said Portageville head coach Jim Bidewell. "Caruthersville beat us a couple times last year so we're glad to pull this one out."
Portageville built a 48-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs were led by Eric Booker's 17 points and J.T. Williams' 12 points. Dantwan Chillers followed up with 11 and Jordan French had 10.
Caruthersville was led by Bryant Rodgers with 21 points. No other player reached double figures for the Tigers.
"We handled the boards pretty well," said Bidewell. "They didn't shoot well and I know they can shoot better than what they did tonight. We still had too many turnovers but we made up for it on the boards."
The Bulldogs host Dexter on Thursday in a rematch of the championship game of the Bloomfield Christmas Tournament which the Bearcats won 64-50.
The game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. since there is no junior varsity matchup.
BENTON, Mo. -- Kelly, which has been struggling after losing leader scorer Michael Romas to a suspension early in the season, picked up a huge win.
Barry Ziegler paced the Hawks (2-9) with 18 points, followed by Tyler Schlosser with 17, Major Burger with 16 and Chris Glastetter with 12.
The Braves (7-5) got 19 points from Chris Johnson, 13 from Terrance Williams and 10 from Chris Pullen
Despite a slow start, the Notre Dame High boys basketball team had little trouble knocking off visiting Fredericktown 64-46 Tuesday night.
Notre Dame improved to 10-4 while Fredericktown fell to 1-10.
Senior co-captains Scott Wittenborn and Doug Schaefer led Notre Dame with 16 and 13 points, respectively.
Wayne Essner added 12 for the Bulldogs.
Nathan Huckaba paced Fredericktown with 10 points. The Bulldogs led just 8-5 after one quarter and 24-17 at halftime but they steadily pulled away in the second half.
SCOTT CITY, Mo. -- Scott City continued to rebound from its 0-5 start as the Rams knocked off Delta.
The Rams (6-7) got 21 points from Chad Weatherspoon, 17 from D.J. Walton, 14 from Tyler Ward and 12 from Craig Jungers.
Delta (5-9) was paced by Lance Kinder with 26 points. Joey Keys had 14, Brent Menz 12 and Craig Bock 10.
MARQUAND, Mo. -- St. Vincent fell behind 14-2 early but used a 30-5 second-quarter outburst to pull away from Marquand.
The Indians (6-3) got 27 points from Tyler Wengert and 16 from Adam Bockman.
The Tigers (5-8) received a game-high 30 points from Heath Stephens. Also in double figures were Ryan Stephens with 14 and Jason Thomas with 10.
CHESTER, Ill. -- Perryville (9-3) recorded its second win and remained undefeated in the round-robin Chester Tournament with a 53-45 win over New Athens, (Ill.).
Chad Ozark topped the Pirates with 24 points, and Jason Dreyer had 11.
ADVANCE -- Jared Ritter's 18 points led the Hornets (8-4) to a comfortable win.
Andrew Jenkins and Aaron Cantrell each had 12 points. Chaffee fell to 2-7.
PUXICO, Mo. -- Kenyan Wright popped in 3-pointers to lead Bell City to a hard-earned victory.
Wright scored 19 points to lead the Cubs (11-3), who got 14 points from Dominitrix Johnson, 12 from C.J. Hadley and 10 from Jason Rampley.
Puxico received 29 points from Matt Fox and 25 from Derek Binford.
ZALMA, Mo. -- The Oran Eagles scorched winless Zalma (0-8) to improve to 9-3 on the season.
Joey Bickings and Ryne Wood paced Oran with 25 and 24 points, respectively.
David Hovis led Zalma with 10.
PATTON, Mo. -- Meadow Heights (7-4) withstood a second-half surge by Oak Ridge (4-8) to edge the Blue Jays.
The Panthers got 19 points from Joey Bell, while Cody Thompson and Josh Mayfield both chipped in with 11.
Jeff Cowan (15), Clayton Ruesler (14), Alex Fadler (14) and Adam Hahs (12) led Oak Ridge.
