Sikeston title hopes are dashed by Delta

Monday, December 10, 2001

CHAFFEE -- For the second straight year, Sikeston's hopes of winning the Chaffee Lady Devils Invitational Tournament have been dashed in the championship game.

The Lady Bulldogs lost to second-seeded Delta 41-25 in Saturday's title game, falling to 3-2 on the season.

Sikeston's offense was out of sync the entire contest, scoring just seven points in the first, second and fourth quarters. Delta's defense held the Lady Bulldogs to just four in the third period.

Rebecca Below led the attack for Delta, scoring a game-high 18 points. The Cook trio of Sarah M. Cook, Rebecca Cook and Sarah Jo Cook each contributed six points.

"I thought our players played very good team defense," said Delta coach Randy White. "Sikeston's got some big kids. We got good pressure on the basketball which made it tough for them to get it inside and our inside kids (Rebecca Below and Sarah Jo Cook) really did a good job."

Jennifer Medlin led all Sikeston scorers with nine points. Summer Ray and Joy Daniel each scored five.

Delta improves to 4-2 with the win.

Sikeston will travel to Farmington tonight for a 6 p.m. game, while Delta hosts Chaffee at 6:30.

In the third place game of the tournament, top-seeded Kelly toppled Scott City, 49-44.

The Lady Hawks trailed by six points heading into the final quarter, but finished the game with a 23-12 run to pull out the win.

Christy Kluesner led the Lady Hawks with 15 points, followed by Dana Essner with 11 and Kelly Essner with seven.

Loren Groves was the heart and soul of Scott City's offense, pouring in 29 points to lead all scorers. Amanda Raines contributed six.

Both Groves and Rains, along with teammates Jenny Pinkston and Kristen Schaeffer fouled out in the contest.

Kelly will travel to East Prairie today for a 6:30 p.m. game.

Sixth-seeded Oran beat out fifth-seeded Chaffee for the consolation championship, 55-44.

Maria Eftink scored 22 points and Ashley Dirnberger added 17 to lead the Lady Eagles' offense. Jennifer Vandeven paced Chaffee with 14 points, followed by Mallory Kiefer and Lori McClard with six each.

Oran will host Scott Central tonight at 6:30 p.m., while Chaffee travels to Delta at 6:30 p.m.
