SIKESTON -- Sikeston played host to the top-ranked girls team in the state Thursday night, losing to Poplar Bluff 59-30. But instead of focusing on the 29-point loss, Sikeston coach Lee Brooks took only positives from the defeat.
"We wanted to come out and show we could play with the same speed and confidence as the number one team in the state," explained Brooks. "It was a good measuring stick. (Poplar Bluff) pressed us hard and we beat it. They came out of it and went into a zone, meaning we gained some respect from them. We really played well."
Joy Daniel led all Sikeston scorers with eight points, followed by Jennifer Medlin with seven, Jaime Medlin with four and Stephanie Clark with three. Ashley Johnson, Kerri Jones, Ebony Collins and Mia Welch each contributed two.
"We are not in their league -- by any means," said Brooks. "But the girls did gain some confidence. This is going to be something we can build on going down the stretch."
Poplar Bluff played the game without Ashley Williams, who is out nursing an injury. Nicole Rivers led the Lady Mules with 16 points.
Jessica Wilson hit two 3-pointers and finished with 15. Sikeston (8-5) will host Kennett on Monday. The Lady Bulldogs were originally scheduled to host Kelly on Tuesday, but that game has been moved to Feb. 5.
Poplar Bluff beat Sikeston in Thursday's junior varsity game, 56-14.
Nyketia Johnson and Berneatress Hunt each scored four points to lead the Lady Bulldogs.
