SIKESTON - The Sikeston 8th and 9th grade basketball teams split with Poplar Bluff's junior high teams on Monday at the Sikeston Field House.
Sikeston's freshmen rolled past Poplar Bluff 63-39 while the 8th grade team lost 48-45.
In the 9th grade game, Sikeston jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The Bulldogs led 17-9 after one quarter and 38-22 at halftime.
Sikeston outscored the Mules 12-3 in the third quarter to build a commanding 50-25 lead.
It's the second time the Bulldogs have defeated Poplar Bluff's freshmen in five days.
"This is the best we've played this year," said Sikeston coach Chris Sarakas. "We shot the ball well and the kids played hard. I was proud of the effort. Everybody got a chance to play and that's always good."
Sikeston (2-2) had 10 different players reach the scoring column. Josh Alvarado led the way with 12 points followed by Felante Larry with 10 points.
Poplar Bluff (1-3) was led by Craig Lansford with 10 points.
Sikeston's 9th grade team will be back in action tomorrow when they host Kelly at 6 p.m.
In the 8th grade game, Sikeston jumped out to a 26-13 halftime lead and appeared to be cruising. But things unraveled quickly in the second half as the Mules were able to pull out the victory.
"That's the best half of basketball we've played so far," said Sikeston 8th grade coach Kevin Self. "In the second half we started turning the ball over and it snowballed on us. But give Poplar Bluff credit, their kids started hitting shots and they never gave up. We just need to be able to play for four quarters."
Sikeston (0-5) was led in scoring by Rod Moore with 11 points. Colt Pruitt and Travis Hudson each scored 10 points. Poplar Bluff (6-0) was led by Hansbrough with 15 points.
Sikeston's 8th grade team won't play again until Jan. 2 when they host Jackson.
