SIKESTON - J.M. Pitman returned to work at his cleaning shop Wednesday after a period of illness at his home.

SIKESTON - Miss Katie Leigh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Neely Leigh of Sikeston, has won recognition for a superior scholarship at Olivette Nazarene College in Kankakee, Ill., by being placed on the mid-semester honor roll.

EAST PRAIRIE - A police chief and an alderman are to be elected in a special election scheduled June 8. Deadline for filing as candidates for the posts was 5 p.m. Monday.

SIKESTON - The high hopes for the Sikeston baseball team have been dimmed a bit after the club lost its second consecutive game. In their first two games, 23 of the team's 42 outs have come by strikeout, an unusually high total for a Sikeston club.

SIKESTON - Deborah Graham was the $300 winner of the "Pot of Gold" sweepstakes. She got her ticket from Homestead. Louetta Gregory was one of the $100 winners of the sweepstakes. She got her ticket at Klothes 2-You.

SIKESTON - Chapter HB of PEO Sisterhood recently conducted a raffle drawing for a weekend trip to the Ritz Carlton in St. Louis. The winner was Marilyn Barkett. PEO is a philanthropic, educational organization for women. Proceeds will fund scholarships for area women.

SIKESTON - Officers at the Bank of Sikeston are anxious to let customers know Monday's name change won't mean a change in quality of service. After 105 years under the same name, the facility will be called Ameri-First Bank. No new owners, no new employees, just a new title, said president Rick Adams.
