SIKESTON -- Kiwanis took seventh place in the in the National League of Sikeston Area Youth Baseball this year, finishing with a record of 2-10.
The squad made up for its underachieving regular season though, upsetting the heavily favored Jaycees in the year-end tournament.
"We knew we had a better team than we showed," said Kiwanis coach Kenny Cantrell. "We just couldn't seem to get it all together, but we had a good time doing it. We had fun and that's the bottom line."
Kiwanis finished in last place in the National League, earning the No. 7 seed for the tournament. The Jaycees came in as the No. 2 seed.
"A couple of guys that didn't hit well all year finally started hitting the ball pretty good," said Cantrell. "Before that we had a lot of offensive problems. We just couldn't tie a whole lot of hits together."
Ashton Cantrell played first base, Adam Kimball was at second, Clayton Mayfield was at short and Charles Faulkner was at third. Chase Ferrell was the team's catcher and Taylor James was a utility player, playing third, second and short depending on who was pitching.
In the outfield, Brian Brock played center. Chris Leible, Derek Hahn, Spencer Tumbleson and Gavin May all platooned in left and right.
Ferrell and Mayfield were both named first team all-stars. Cantrell, Faulkner, Kimball and James were all second team all-stars.
"Brian Brock started out real slow, but hit the ball real well toward the end of the year," said Cantrell. "He was probably our most improved player."
