Area golfers asked to 'chip' in fight against cancer

Sunday, July 7, 2002

SIKESTON -- Sikeston's serious golfers as well as the weekend putters are teaming up to participate in the American Cancer Society's 19th Annual Charity Golf Classic 4-Person Scramble.

The event offers golfers an opportunity to "chip" in the fight against cancer.

"It's always a good event," said benefit chairman Frances Willis. "A lot of people enjoy playing in it. It's very important for us in raising money for the Scott County unit. We help a lot of cancer victims, and we depend on our golfers to help us out. It has always been a big success."

Teams of enthusiastic golfers will tee-off at the Sikeston Country Club on Wednesday, July 24 at 9 a.m. Registration will be at 8 a.m.

The Classic is open to men and women, both the experienced golfer and the beginner alike. And this year, a new feature has been added. Teams that win on the local level have the opportunity to advance to the state championship at the Jack Nicklaus Course in Porta Cima.

Winners there will move on to the national championship at the PGA National course in Palm Beach, Fla.

"We would like to see a big turnout," said Willis. "It is a big event in Missouri and all over the United States. We have very competitive golfers, and this gives them an opportunity to go and see how well they can play against people of all levels."

There will be six flights overall, three men and three women. The top two teams in each flight will be invited to the state tournament.

The entry fee is $50 per person, with a cart rental fee of $16 per team. The field is limited to 32 teams. All proceeds from the event will benefit the American Cancer Society. "It offers the satisfaction of knowing you are helping cancer victims," said Willis. "It's a terrible, dreaded disease. We hope that by having these fund-raisers, research will continue and we will have a cure in our lifetime."

Checks must accompany entries payable to the American Cancer Society. Send entries to the Sikeston Country Club, P.O. Box 675, Sikeston, MO, 63801. For further information, contact Kevin Collins at (573) 472-4225 or Willis at (573) 471-7216. "The goal we have set is to have at least two greens sponsors for every hole," said Willis. "We would also like to have 32 teams to fill the field. Hopefully by the 24th, we will have that."

Along with the scramble, there will be course prizes, door prizes, hole prizes and a raffle.

The event is sponsored by the SCC Ladies' and Men's Golf Associations and Ralph Distributing Company.
