SIKESTON - Invitations have been issued for the wedding of Lilly Heyde, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Heyde of Jackson, and John Henry Yount of Sikeston, son of Dr. and Mrs. Henry Yount of St. Louis. The two will be married at 8 p.m. June 24 at the New McKendree Methodist Church in Jackson.
BENTON - Residents of Scott County received a total of $134,759 in public assistance in May from federal and state funds, according to Scott County Welfare Director Ruth Scott.
BENTON - Scott County voters who went to the polls turned thumbs down on a $600 million bond issue that passed statewide. Only 10 percent of the registered voters cast ballots on the question. Amendment One was soundly defeated in New Madrid, Mississippi and Stoddard counties, too.
SIKESTON - The Sikeston Standard Democrat's commitment to education was once again recognized by the Missouri State Teachers Association. The group announced the winners of its annual Media Awards competition, naming the Standard Democrat winner of the award for general coverage among daily newspapers. This is the seventh year the Sikeston paper has been honored as a recipient of the award. In addition to the general coverage award, the paper was cited for its photography and received honorable mention honors. "We are proud of the emphasis we put on education, not just in Sikeston but also from the surrounding area. We are honored to be recognized again by MSTA," said Publisher Michael Jensen.
