The SD was a juggernaut this season, toppling every opponent it played en route to a perfect 14-0 record. Sikeston's favorite sons left it all out on the field this year, taking first in the league and first in the year-end tournament.
"It has been a great season," said SD coach Sabrina Newman. "The boys showed true heart and character to do what they did, but it shouldn't be about wining. It should be about learning, playing together as a team, picking each other up, and learning the game of baseball."
The SD only had 10 players on its roster this year, and with Musial League rules allowing 10 players in the field, every member of the team played every inning of every game. In all, six different pitchers were used.
The team's mettle was tested on several occasions. In three of the last four games of the regular season, the Standard Democrat pulled out come-from-behind victories to keep the winning streak alive.
Members of the team were Noah Moyers, Colby Dunn, Jordan Poyner, Garrick Fisher, James Meyer, Jason Stratman, Ross Bohannon, Nick Ward, Blake Newman and Evan Underwood. Coaches were Randy Bohannon, Mike Moyers, Tim Underwood and Newman.
"It's difficult to pick one or two players that stood out when you have a season like this," said Newman. "To go undefeated, it takes everybody doing the best that they can every game."
The team finished the season with the number 57 on their hats, in honor of fallen Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile.
"We prayed before each game," said Newman. "Some things are just more important."
It was another fine season from one of the finest little league dynasties in town.
