Body is found in Mississippi River

Sunday, July 4, 2004

NEW MADRID -- The body of a missing Kentucky man was found Friday in New Madrid County.

Around 11 a.m., officers with the New Madrid County Sheriff's Department were notified by a local farmer that a body had been found off the shore of the Mississippi River at Robert Henry's boat ramp, which is located at Highway AB in New Madrid County.

According to New Madrid County Coroner Tim Clayton, the body has been identified as Jeffrey Allen Woodward of Morgan Field, Ky. Woodward had reportedly been missing since June 21 when he fell off a barge at Cairo, Ill.

Authorities believe Woodward fell off the docked barge and into the water where the Ohio River dumps into the Mississippi River. Search crews were hampered by rising waters from recent rains and a swift current. Ballard County rescue workers even utilized an underwater camera but were still unable to locate Woodward.

The sheriff's office estimated the body traveled 100 river miles. The body was pulled out around noon Friday.
