Oran volleyball squad downs Charleston in home opener

ORAN - The Oran Lady Eagles volleyball team opened the season with a home victory against the Charleston Lady Bluejays.

Oran won 17-15, 15-3 behind some solid serving from the Lady Eagles.

Jessica Prino led the charge with four aces. She also had 15 assists and 17 points.

Amber Seyer led the team with nine kills and two blocks. She had four points.

Teresa Hodges and Candace Duncan each had three kills for the Lady Eagles.

Oran head coach Tonya Skinner said winning the first set might have set the tone for the second set.

"We were actually up 14-7 and they came back on us," said Skinner of the first set. "There was some real good hustling towards the end of that game with some long rallies. The second game was pretty much smooth sailing. Our serving was excellent tonight."

PORTAGEVILLE -- Portageville's volleyball team posted its first win on Thursday night, beating Hayti in two sets. The Lady Bulldogs won the first set 15-13, then the second 15-1.

"The girls played well," said Portageville coach Kerwin Urhahn.

"I was really pleased with their aggressiveness. We got to serving the ball a lot better in the second game."

The junior varsity team lost to Hayti in three sets. The Lady Bulldogs lost the first set 10-15, won the second 15-13, then lost the third 12-15.

Portageville (1-1) will host Clarkton on Monday at 6 p.m.

ESSEX -- Richland's volleyball team was defeated by Gideon in straight sets on Thursday night. The Lady Rebels lost the first set 5-15, then the second 7-15.

Richland (0-2) will host Woodland on Monday at 6 p.m.
