Looking Back in Time at March 19

Wednesday, March 19, 2003

SIKESTON - Sikeston General Hospital: Mr. and Mrs. Russell T. Baker of Dexter have a baby boy born last Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Warren G. Barrett of Morehouse have a baby girl born March 16. Mr. and Mrs. David M. Russell of Matthews have twin sons, born Saturday.

SIKESTON - Prizes were awarded yesterday afternoon to Barbara Barker, a sixth grade student at Matthews School, and Jimmy Starnes, a fifth grade student at South Grade School for submitting the best essays in their respective grades to the Kings Highway Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution.

SIKESTON - When a team loses its top hitter, pitcher and defensive standout to graduation, it figures that the club has a lot of holes, that the club might have a long season, or both. The 1983 Sikeston bulldogs baseball team is such a team, and the Dogs have a lot of questions to answer as their season progresses.

SIKESTON - The search for two shaggy white dogs came to an end Wednesday as the last of the pair was located and picked up at the city's Recreational Complex. The search for the animals was initiated after it was reported that one of them bit a 9-year-old Sikeston girl on the leg Sunday afternoon. Time was of the essence. If the dogs were not found soon and determined to be rabid or not, the girl would have to undergo rabies treatment.

PORTAGEVILLE - Portageville's three-year run through the Class 2A state championships may end - soon. Coach Jim Bidewell is bracing for it. "We're going to be down next year. That's one way to put it," he said. "We're losing a bunch of good seniors and we don't really have people coming up to fill their shoes right now."
