ELLSINORE -- The Sikeston Lady Bulldogs softball team equaled last season's win total in just their third game of the year.
With a 13-1 road win against East Carter County, Sikeston is now 2-1 on the season and look to keep improving on the season.
"This was a great way to bounce back after our loss Friday," said Sikeston head coach Jenny Hobeck. "We played good, solid defense and we came from behind and exploded at the plate in the late innings."
Sikeston trailed 1-0 after one inning but the Lady Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the third.
They grabbed the lead with two runs in the fifth inning and racked up five runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to rout East Carter County.
"The girls knew they should've been hitting their pitcher the whole game long," said Hobeck. "She didn't throw as hard as what we've seen so once we got our timing down we started hitting."
Sikeston got a great pitching performance from freshman Allison Blurton, who pitched all seven innings. She allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out nine.
"That's her first varsity game and she did a super job," said Hobeck. "We fielded the bunt much better this game and we played much better defensively."
Sikeston also wasn't shabby at the plate as they collected 13 hits.
Leading the way was freshman Paige Silverthorn, who went 3-5 with a triple and three RBIs.
Blurton helped her own cause by going 2-4 with a double and three RBIs.
Another freshman, Molly Brinkmeyer, went 2-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Other contributors were Julie Annesser (2-3, RBI), Kayla Crocker (1-3), Misti Clark (1-2) and Haley Davis (2-3).
Sikeston will play in the eight-team Notre Dame Tournament on Thursday. They will open with host school Notre Dame at 4 p.m.
