Warrants issued after year-long investigation

BENTON - Charges were filed Thursday against seven Sikeston residents after six drug-related federal search warrants were served here early Wednesday.

The search warrants were served by law enforcement officers from the Scott County Sheriff's Office, New Madrid County Sheriff's Office, Sikeston Department of Public Safety, SEMO Drug Task Force, Missouri State, Highway Patrol, Drug Enforcement Administration and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Scott County Sheriff Bill Ferrell described the serving of the warrants as a result of a year-long multi-jurisdictional investigation. In addition to the search warrants, numerous state and federal arrest warrants were served.

According to Ferrell numerous motor vehicles, U.S. currency and a large amount of controlled substance believed to be crack cocaine was seized during the early morning raid.

Arrested were: Elliot M. Sumlin, 31, for distribution of a controlled substance near public housing, bond $500,000; Ella Sumlin, 68, two counts of distribution of a controlled substance near public housing, bond $500,000 on each count; Eldridge Sumlin, 31, distribution of a controlled substance near public housing, bond $500,000; Eric K. Ranson, 24, possession of a controlled substance, bond $27,500; Makesha L. Gipson, 28, possession of a controlled substance, bond $27,500; R. B. Yarber, 72, federal warrant; and Wayne J. Sumlin, 43, federal warrant.

Ferrell said additional suspects are being sought on warrants regarding the investigation.
