SIKESTON - Two large real estate transactions were announced today by R.D. Clayton of Sikeston, a real estate broker. D.W. Gilmore of Benton has purchased the block of land known as the Jones Subdivision. In another transaction, Joe W. Scales of Polaski, Tenn., purchased a 30-acre tract of land east of Charleston together with a brick home and five barns from Hershel Wood and Clara Wood.

SIKESTON - Chamber President William S. Huff told the Rotary Club last night that Quality Steel of Cleveland, Miss., will open a place here by the first of the year employing 25.
SIKESTON - Oliver the skunk left this basement quarters in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Lacy, 926 Kingshighway, after being under the family's care five days. The animal showed his appreciation by leaving through an open door without a single scent.

CHARLESTON - Approval of a 40 cent per $100 assessed valuation tax increase will provide the R-1 School District a new auditorium. The special proposal on the Nov. 3 ballot will seek approval for funds.

NEW MADRID - All 55,000 books in the New Madrid County Library system are now stored on computer and check-out of books is done by way of a computer scanner. The equipment was purchased through donations, grants and budgeting without any reduction in the budget for book purchases, said Sue Ann Schlosser, the director of the library system.
SIKESTON - League champion for the inaugural season of the Sikeston Adult Coed Softball League is Meyer Supply, which posted a 9-2 record.
SIKESTON - Sikeston's volleyball squad won matches against Chaffee on Thursday, winning the first 15-4, losing the second, 15-13, then winning the third 15-9.
