Heartland teams advance in softball world series

GREENVILLE, N.C. --

The Benton 16-and-under Babe Ruth softball team defeated Concord, (CA) 4-3 in the Babe Ruth World Series on Monday in Greenville, N.C.

Benton fell behind 2-1 in the first inning before rallying for two runs in the top of the fourth to lead 3-2. Concord tied it up with a run in the bottom of the fifth before Benton plated the eventual winning run in the top of the sixth on an RBI-single by Ashley Kern.

Kern led Benton with two hits and three RBIs.

Whitney Beggs threw six innings of relief to pick up the win. She allowed one unearned run off four hits.

On Sunday, Benton lost to Washington (N.C.) 4-3 in eight innings.

Benton led 3-0 but Washington tied the score with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Washington won the game with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Dana Essner took the loss in seven-plus innings of work. She allowed four runs (one earned) off five hits with five strikeouts.

Stacy Schwartz had two RBIs to lead Benton.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. --

In the 12-and-under Babe Ruth Softball World Series, New Hamburg defeated New Orleans 5-2 on Sunday in Louisville.

New Hamburg built a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning before New Orleans finally plated a couple of runs. New Hamburg added one more run in the top of the fifth to lead 5-2.

Casey Kern picked up the win, throwing four innings and allowing two runs off four hits. Kristain Burger threw two innings, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts.

Kalie Hughes led New Hamburg with two hits.
