Bringing visitors to area begins with advertising

Sunday, October 16, 2005

At the September meetings of the Advisory and Commission Boards, we reviewed the 2006 fiscal year budget for the Sikeston and Miner Convention and Visitors Bureau. After much planning and discussion, we've determined what we need to do at the Bureau this coming year.

The committees agreed advertising is our No. 1 cost effective outlet, in particular the preprint "Spring and Summer" newspaper insert. This year's advertisement rewarded us with over 7,000 inquiries for information. A contract with the Missouri Division of Tourism splits the cost with the CVB for the ad in this insert.

The second most cost effective advertising is the Missouri Vacation Planner. We received over 900 inquiries from this book; therefore we will place advertising here as well.

The third most cost effective ad was in the "Fall and Winter" insert. Last year, we received over 500 inquiries from this tabloid.

Research has proven our return on investment beneficial in the Midwest Traveler, Going Places, Home & Away, and AAA Living magazines as well. Therefore the board decided to advertise throughout the year in these publications.

Attending various conferences and group leader conferences is another effective way for getting the word out about Sikeston and Miner. The ones we've targeted to date are the Teams 2005 Conference in November, the St. Louis Women's Show in February, two Group Leaders of America Shows and The Great American Road-Show in March. At these conferences the motor-

coach market is targeted as well as the leisure traveler.

Being active on the state and regional level has proven beneficial. We will attend the Governor's Conference on Tourism, Capitol Days for Tourism, Missouri Travel Council, Missouri Association Of Convention and Visitors Bureaus, River Heritage and Bootheel Tourism meetings as well.

Our Visitors Guide for the coming year is updated and we will be printing a calendar of events. Also the CVB maintains the Website, www.visitsikeston-

miner.com, and place ads in community programs.

Anyone interested in having an event printed in CVB calendar of events or listed on the Website should call the Convention and Visitors Bureau prior to Dec. 15 to get their free listings.

It looks like it will be another busy year for the CVB and we appreciate the public's support and assistance. If you would like to be a part of our active group, just give us a call at 471-6362, we would be happy to have you.

And remember, tourism dollars make everyone's economy stronger.
