Spring means preparing park facilities

SIKESTON - April showers bring May flowers - and long grass.

This is always a busy time of the year for the Sikeston Parks Department as they try to keep the green areas trimmed while preparing park facilities for summer activities.

"One of the big things right now is trying to keep up with the grass," said Jiggs Moore, parks director. "We're responsible for mowing the complex, swimming pool and normally the VFW stadium, but we've had some greatly-appreciated help there from Bizzell Lawn Care."

There are also miscellaneous areas to mow such as the Broadway right-of-way, he added.

"Next week we will be concentrating our efforts on the swimming pool - we've got to drain it, clean it and paint it," Moore said. If the weather cooperates it should take about a week, he estimated.

The ball fields also have some burned out light bulbs to replace, which are also the Parks Department's responsibility, but the leagues actually take care of the ball fields themselves.

"We're running hard right now," said Moore, "on top of which, we've been shorthanded the last month or so, so we're trying to play catch up on a couple of things."

Moore said one new employee started at the Parks Department this week and another starts Monday which will bring the Parks Department up to about 80 of their normal staffing level, Moore said.
