Percy Edgar Johnson, 34, is charged with first degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, first degree assault and felonious restraint, according to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, and is being held without bond at the Sikeston jail.
The crime occurred at around 1:15 p.m. Friday, according to DPS Director Drew Juden, at 411 W. Malone Avenue where the victim, Mary Rudd, 24, of Sikeston, is believed to have received several stab wounds to the neck during an altercation with Johnson.
Johnson allegedly fled the scene and was pursued on foot by a witness and law enforcement personnel before being captured by a Scott County Deputy and turned over to DPS officers.
The South Scott County Ambulance Service transported Rudd to Missouri Delta Medical Center where emergency room personnel pronounced her dead after efforts to resuscitate her failed.
DPS reports that after being arrested Thursday for assault, Johnson was released Friday and was to return to court on June 6. Neither Johnson nor Rudd had a previous history of arrest for violence with DPS.
"We would like to extend our condolences to the family of the victim," Juden said. "And I would like to thank the Scott County Sheriff's Office for their assistance with the apprehension of the suspect. I'm glad the prosecutor issued a warrant for first degree murder because it was premeditated with malice and forethought."
