The Bluejays saw big performances out of freshmen Blake Branum and Derek Hoppe as Charleston improved to 5-1 on the year.
"That was a big win for us," said Charleston coach Mitch Baker. "We still didn't play very well, but it's a good sign when you don't play well and still beat a good team. We played just well enough to win."
In varsity singles, Alec Peterson squeaked past Carbondale's Steven Yau 9-8 with a 9-7 tiebreaker. Kyle Kemp lost 5-8 to Carbondale's Larry Spears.
In the No. 3 spot, Branum won 8-6 over Carbondale's Michael Gross. Lee Hess lost 4-8 to Carbondale's Dough Scheffer, then Hoppe defeated Carbondale's Bryce Asler 8-4.
"I was proud of everybody, but really proud of the two freshmen," said Baker. "Branum and Hoppe are both playing really well. They both pulled out big wins for us today."
In the No. 6 spot, Jake Garrard won 8-5 over Carbondale's Mdran Kachgal.
In varsity doubles, Peterson and Kemp beat Spears and Gross. Branum and Hess lost 1-8 to Yau and Scheffer, then Hoppe and Garrard won 8-6 over Ailish Imada and Bernie Lee.
Charleston (5-1) will host Kennett on Thursday.
"We're playing hard, we just have to start cutting down on the mistakes," said Baker. "We're getting better, and that's all I can ask for."
