DEXTER - Kenneth William Averett Jr., 73, died April 8, 2003, at Missouri Southern Healthcare.

Born May 8, 1929, in Morehouse, son of the late Kenneth William and Gussie Westerfield Averett Sr., he was a member of the Dexter Church of Christ. In 1950, he joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Texas, Massachusetts and Guam.

On Dec. 9, 1951, in Piggott, Ark., he married Fannie Ethel Brigman who survives of the home. They lived in Charter Oak until 1961, when they moved their family to Dexter. Mr. and Mrs. Averett owned and operated the Allis Chalmer Dealership in Dexter, in conjunction with his parent, for 34 years. His passions in life were God, family, baseball and fishing.

Survivors in addition to his wife include: three daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Leon Smith and Jeannie and Alan Robinson of Dexter and Kim and Jay Monteer of Raymore; one son and daughter-in-law, Marty and Lynne Averett of Dexter; one sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Bill Flowers of Dexter; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Larry Averett of Overland Park, Kan., and Michael and Renee Averett of St. Charles, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Summer Swindell of Dexter, Dawn Smothers of Cape Girardeau, Gabe Smith, Brent Robinson, Jordan Averett and Colton Averett of Dexter and Hunter Collins and Morgan Monteer of Raymore; and one great-grandchild, Alexis Smith of Dexter.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter, where services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday. Kevin Lawrence and Dale Grissom will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Chalk Bluff Cemetery near Dexter.
