POPLAR BLUFF - The Sikeston tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season with an 8-1 victory at Poplar Bluff on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs, playing without No. 1 player Ryne Vickery due to illness, still overwhelmed the Mules in all but one match.
"At this point we need matches," said Sikeston head coach Brian James. "We haven't played much up to this point. We've got two big ones coming up tomorrow and Thursday. It's good just to get some matches in."
With Vickery out, every player had to move up a spot.
The Bulldogs swept the doubles competition. Kyle Weeks and Peter Jones beat Spencer Piland and Chad Reed 8-1; Marc Leible/Chris Robey beat Andrew Harper/Jarrett Killpack 8-2; and Matt Strom/Logan Wagoner beat Drew Schuermann/Jon Wujcik 8-6.
"I thought our doubles played a little better today," said James. "Our doubles teams are going to have to be a strong point for us this year so we need to continue to improve in that area."
In singles, Jones beat Schuermann 8-3; Leible beat Killpack 8-2; Robey beat Piland 8-2; Weeks beat Harper 8-1; Strom lost to Reed 6-8; and Wagoner beat Wujcik 8-2.
Sikeston won the junior varsity match 6-2. Winners for the Bulldogs were Kyle Howard, Cody Weeks, Chris Matthews, Andrew Powell, Ryan Beaird and the doubles team of Ryan Dukes and Howard.
Sikeston will host Charleston Thursday at 4 p.m.
