Four face burglary charges

Wednesday, June 23, 2004

BENTON -- Four Scott County men are charged in connection with weekend burglaries at a New Hamburg business.

Mitchell A. Bryant, 18, of Chaffee; Brant J. Heuring, 18, of Benton; and Heath M. Watkins, 19, and Lee D. Ziegler, 18, of Sikeston are charged with two counts of second-degree burglary and two counts of stealing.

The Scott County Sheriff's Office received a report Sunday morning from the owner of Kern's Grocery, Bill Kern, that the business had been burglarized and numerous cartons of cigarettes taken. According to Capt. Jerry Bledsoe, entry was gained through a rear door leading to the basement.

On Monday morning, the sheriff's office was notified of a second burglary at the business sometime during the early morning hours. Entry was gained in the same method as the first burglary but an inside door that was secured after the first burglary was forced open. Cigarettes and money being collected for a charity were reported missing.

An investigation by the sheriff's office led to the arrest of the four Scott County men and recovery of most of the stolen property. Bledsoe said $480 in currency, 12 cartons of cigarettes and candy items were recovered.

Bond was set at $5,000 each, and they all bonded out. A court date was set for July 14 before Judge David Mann in the Division 5 Associate Court.
