ESSEX - Rep. Tom Baker of Stoddard County today called attention to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling which, he said, could result in Stoddard County not having a representative in the Missouri Legislature after next year. Baker said that the "Supreme Court continues to rewrite the laws of this country and invades fields that are the function of our Congress. The Supreme Court, in ruling illegal a 'little federal' system for the states, has destroyed the checks and balance system related in our state constitution which recognizes the need for state senators to be elected on a population basis and state representatives on a regional or county basis."

VANDUSER - The winner of the Miss Survivor's Day pageant was named during the recent celebration. Alyshia McBride, 15, daughter of Barry and Suzy McBride of Vanduser, won the title. First runner-up was Laura Hargrove, 15, daughter of Ben Easter and Myra Lancaster of Vanduser. Second runner-up was Lesleigh May, 18, daughter of Lacy and Helen May of Vanduser. Third runner-up was Kelly Owens, 18, daughter of Gary and Kathy Owens of Vanduser.


SIKESTON - The second McDonald's location on South Main Street in front of Wal-Mart opened Thursday with a visit from Ronald McDonald himself. The clown welcomed guests and signed autographs. Decorated in the McDonald's Racing Team Theme, the restaurant features a play area for children.
