Looking Back in Time at Dec. 5

Thursday, December 5, 2002

SIKESTON - Dr. G.W.H. Presnell was elected president of the Scott County Medical Society at a meeting held Wednesday in the Library. Dr. E.J. Nienstedt and Dr. A.A. Mayfield, both of Sikeston, were named as board directors.

SIKESTON - A baby boy arrived at Missouri Delta Community Hospital for Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Williams of Morehouse.

SIKESTON - For 10 consecutive years the Girl Scouts and Brownie Troops in Sikeston have busied themselves making toys for distribution to deserving needy children who might otherwise be passed by at Christmas time. This year's Toy Festival proved even better than those preceding it in the number and variety of toys the girls had made.

ORAN - Santa Claus will arrive by fire truck in Oran Dec. 18 with treats for children.

SIKESTON - Miss Sikeston Cynthia Lee Barnett is the Standard Democrat's Calendar Girl for the month of December. Miss Barnett is the daughter of Sandra Mock of Sikeston and David Barnett of Bertrand.

SIKESTON - The holidays are exciting for children, but they can end in disaster. Paula Null, emergency room staff nurse at Missouri Delta Medical Center, said at least one child is sent to the hospital every Christmas because of an unsafe gift. Null said toys are supposed to have an age grouping on them and parents and guardians really need to use these guidelines. "The manufacturers know best, and the parent's aren't doing the child any favors by not following them," she said.
