SIKESTON - First, it was the soil. Now it's the groundwater. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is back on the Quality Plating site, this time for what environmental engineer Larry Erickson called "the next phase" of the toxic waste site testing and cleanup. Six years ago, the site, located off Scott County Road 448, was placed on the National Priorities List of hazardous waste sites. The facility burned in 1983.

SIKESTON - Several members of Habitat for Humanities, a national volunteer group in Sikeston to make repairs to the Citizens Home Mission Outreach Center, are doing more than a little spring cleaning. The 22 volunteers, all students at the University of Missouri-Columbia, are doing everything from repainting the gym to installing showers in the bathrooms for the new homeless sheltered. The students average 7 to 8 hours days and are doing the volunteer work during their spring break vacation.
