SIKESTON - A Sikeston man was arrested Thursday by the Sikeston Department of Public Safety on child abuse charges.

According to DPS Director Drew Juden, Brandon L. Wheatley, 21, admitted to a 5-month-old child being injured while in his care, "but he told nine different stories of how the incident occurred." Juden said none of these were consistent with the injuries the child sustained.

According to the child's mother, who was Wheatley's girlfriend, the child sustained a serious skull fracture while Wheatley was caring for the child.

After Wheatley's arrest, as he was being led to the processing area, he attempted to pull an officer down a flight of stairs. However, the officer maintained his balance and control of Wheatley, avoiding injury to himself and the suspect.

Wheatley was then taken to the Missouri Delta Medical Center Emergency Room to be checked by a physician, who determined the suspect was not injured.

Charged with first degree assault on the child, child endangerment and assault on a police officer, Wheatley is in custody in the Scott County Jail with bond set at $150,000.

Juden said he encourages anyone with information about this incident or any crime to contact DPS at 471-6200 or 471-1500. All communications are confidential.
