BENTON - A Scott County sheriff's deputy is recovering from an injury sustained during an altercation in the county jail.
Department staff were conducting visitation Saturday when an inmate, Orlando Carter, refused to go back to his cell, according to Sheriff Bill Ferrell. When deputies attempted to return him to his cell, Carter reportedly rushed Deputy Justin Swiney and pinned him against the wall.
During the rush of several other jailers to assist Swiney and subdue Carter, Deputy Jeff Schmitt's hand was injured. X-rays taken later that day indicated a fracture.
"This is just an example of how fast a situation can change in the jail. The incident could have been much worse," Ferrell said in a press release Wednesday. "When we don't have adequate staff, someone gets hurt."
Carter is currently being held on $55,000 bond for second degree assault of a law enforcement officer, third degree assault and forgery.
Ferrell said additional charges may be filed in connection with the jail incident.
