Two others injured as SUV collides with DPS vehicle

SIKESTON -- A Sikeston man is in serious condition following a Tuesday morning collision with a Sikeston Department of Public Safety patrol car in Scott County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports the accident occurred around 8:07 a.m. on U.S. Highway 61 in Sikeston. The accident caused the northbound lane of the highway to be closed for a period of time.

A vehicle driven by George E. Simmons, 80, of Sikeston, turned west in front of the northbound patrol car driven by Andrew J. Cooper, 34, of Sikeston. Cooper's vehicle then struck the front left-hand side of Simmons' vehicle.

Cooper's passenger, Grace K. Roberts, 35, of Sikeston, and Simmons were transported by air ambulance to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. There, Simmons was treated for serious injuries while Roberts sustained moderate injuries. Cooper was transported by ambulance to Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston, where he was treated for minor injuries.
