FREDERICKTOWN -- Sikeston's tennis team took first place in the Fredericktown Tennis Tournament over the weekend.
The Lady Bulldogs posted 13 1/2 points, beating out Fredericktown with 10 1/2, Dexter with 5 and Chaffee with 2 1/2.
"This was a great tournament," said Sikeston coach Lynne DeWitt. "It was the first time we have ever been in one. It was good because it was set up like the district."
In the finals of the singles tournament, Sikeston's Elizabeth Killion was defeated by Fredericktown's Morgan Kemp 6-7 (7-9), 6-2, 6-4.
Killion reached the finals by beating Chaffee's Tara Propst and Fredericktown's Jessie Cooper.
"The finals of the singles could have gone either way," said DeWitt. "Elizabeth played tough. This was her toughest competition all year."
Also in singles, Sikeston's Lindsay Leible beat Chaffee's Stefanie Whitaker in the first round, 6-0, 6-0. Leible lost to Kemp in the semifinals 1-6, 0-6.
In the doubles tournament, Charlie Richey and Jeri Nichols defeated Dexter in the championship match.
The two reached the finals with wins over Dexter and Fredericktown.
"The doubles team of Richey and Nichols did great," sad DeWitt. "They are playing together as a team, and that's wonderful. Both of those girls are competitive."
Also in doubles, Gilliland and Bowman lost in the first round to Jarrell and Critchlow 4-6, 6-4, 2-6.
"The girls worked very, very hard," said DeWitt. "All the matches were great."
