Sikeston volleyball team beats Oran in straight sets

Wednesday, October 1, 2003

ORAN - The Sikeston volleyball team improved to 2-1 in the SEMO Conference on Tuesday night when they defeated Oran on the road 25-23, 25-19.

It was a much better performance for the Lady Bulldogs after falling to SEMO Conference foe Scott City on Monday.

"It was nice to win tonight after the performance we had the night before," said Sikeston head coach Steve Beydler. "We've had a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality this year. It was nice to see the better team show up more tonight than the other. While we're still not consistent through an entire match, I saw better communication and better setting tonight."

In the first set, Sikeston actually trailed 22-15 at one point before rallying for the victory.

"After being down that much, I told them that they had come back before from a deficit like that," said Beydler. "So they knew they could do it. Then they started playing some ball and it was nice to watch. It deflated Oran a little bit heading into that second game."

Rachael Vining led the Lady Bulldogs with eight kills. Paige Kaiser added six kills and Berneatress Hunt had three kills.

Sikeston's leaders in serving were Vining (8 att., 6 pts), Kaiser (8 att., 1 ace, 1 err., 5 pts), Erin Box (8 att., 3 aces, 2 err., 4 pts), Maggie Pfefferkorn (8 att., 1 ace, 1 err., 5 pts), Leo Voss (9 att., 1 ace, 1 err., 7 pts) and Quinn Kaiser (3 att., 1 ace, 1 pt).

Hunt had the team's only block.

Sikeston will travel to Caruthersville on Monday at 6 p.m.

In the junior varsity match, Sikeston won in three sets, 16-25, 27-25, 25-14, to improve to 9-4-2.

"The junior varsity has been playing some tough, close games, but they've been finding a way to finish on top," said Beydler. "I'm really pleased with the way they've been playing."

Lindsey Wright had the hot hand serving, with 18 attempts and nine aces. Amber Anthony had 15 attempts with two aces while Casey Ray had 12 attempts with three aces.

Others with big games were Kiarra Morris (5 kills, block), Emily Taylor (2 kills), Khassie Patterson (1 kill) and Anthony (2 kills).
