Ameren aids area school

Sunday, September 25, 2005

EAST PRAIRIE - East Prairie Junior High School recently received a SMART Board interactive whiteboard under Ameren Corporation's new "Power Up" program that brings technology and support to classrooms and teachers.

In 2005, Ameren is donating more than 200 of the devices - with a total value of $600,000 - to kindergarten through 12th grade classrooms throughout the Ameren companies' service areas in Missouri and Illinois.

The SMART Board interactive whiteboard is a touch-sensitive display about the size of a standard whiteboard. Hooked up to a computer and projector, it operates like a giant computer screen that students and teachers simply touch to operate. Students can also write over applications in digital ink, then save their work for future study and review. The interactive whiteboard engages students with diverse learning styles by providing both immediate access to a wide range of digital materials and a common focus for the entire class.

"We are elated to receive this great education technology through Ameren's Power Up Education Program. Not only does it allow our students to become even more technologically savvy, but it allows each student to think critically, create and produce in a most conducive manner. Obviously, supporting and improving education is a top priority for Ameren." said East Prairie Principal Eva Chance.

"Our new Power Up education grant program came in response to survey results from Ameren customers who said they care most about improving education," said AmerenUE Energy Delivery Senior Vice President Richard Mark. "We support our communities in many ways beyond our basic role of providing reliable gas and electric service. This program is aimed at supporting education throughout Ameren's service area - where school systems area facing some tough financial pressures."

Applications must be submitted electronically through the Ameren Web site. For more information, and applications, to www.ameren.com/education. Then click on "Power Up Grants". Anyone with questions may call toll free 877-4-
