Johnson competes in national event

Wednesday, July 6, 2005

ENID, Okla. -- Sikeston heavyweight Joe Johnson recently competed in the National Junior Duals Championships for the Missouri Ramrods, who finished fifth in the Greco-Roman competition.

Johnson won five of eight matches, winning his first five by pin fall before losing by a decision and two pins. In the fifth-place match, he lost to Erik Nye of California, a second-place finisher in the 215-pound class at the 2004 Junior Nationals. Johnson defeated Nye in an earlier round.

"Pretty good for his first national event," said Sikeston High wrestling coach Ivan Robison, of Johnson who has signed to wrestle collegiately at Missouri Valley College. "He has a chance to be an All-American if he does well at the National Finals."

The National Junior Finals will be held in Fargo, N.D., on July 24-30.

Missouri's freestyle team placed seventh.
