60 years ago

SIKESTON - Sikeston will have a new Junior Legion Baseball team this year. Plans are already in process for the team. The schedule hasn't been worked out yet, but will be made out in a few days. Herb Walton has leased 10 acres of ground over on the old baseball diamond for the Junior Leaguers and Slim Limbaugh will be the boys manager.

40 years ago

SIKESTON - A cross 22 feet high and weighing well over one ton was donated to the Sikeston Memorial Park Cemetery by the Ben Carroll Family yesterday. The grounds around the cross will be landscaped with shrubbery and lighted at night.

SIKESTON - Scott County voted to lift the Sunday Blue Laws, which limited retail sales on Sunday. Also a proposal to repeal the ban on Sunday sales was approved by New Madrid County residents.

EAST PRAIRIE - Dormant for some years and basically in existence in name only, a few business owners and citizens have began efforts to activate the East Prairie Chamber of Commerce with a goal of helping their community grow. Some 32 citizens and business owners attended Monday's meetings offering their support to the organization.


SIKESTON - Fed up with the condition of Section 8 housing in their neighborhood, a group of resident of the Clayton Addition let their grievances be known during the City Council meeting Monday . Serving as spokesman for a group of concerned citizens, Jim Terrell presented a petition signed by 120 residents.
