SIKESTON -- The Second Annual Sikeston Elementary Cross Country Meet was held on the campus of Sikeston Senior High School on Thursday.

Physical education teachers from the four elementary schools held tryouts at their schools to pick the ten best girls and ten best boys. These students were then brought to the high school to run in a cross-country meet.

Team scores from this year's meet were: 1st place - Lee Hunter 47, 2nd place - Southeast 143, 3rd place - Morehouse 164, and 4th place Matthews 166.

In cross country the places of the first five runners are added together to determine a team score, with the lowest score winning. In this meet the boys' score for a school was added to the girls' score to determine the school champion.

"Lee Hunter was the team champion last year and they ran away with it again this year," said organizer Gary Williams. "Coach (Chris) Sarakas of Lee Hunter did an excellent job of getting his kids ready for the run. The team champion will have their school name engraved on a traveling trophy that they get to keep at their school until next year."

The individual winners were Elizabeth Rains from Southeast in the girls race and David Trice from Lee Hunter in the boys race.

Trice also won the race last year as a 3rd grader.

"I would like to thank the cross country athletes, teachers and parents who helped run the meet," said Williams. "Thanks to these people, the meet was a great success."
