Sikeston tennis team wins first match

DEXTER -- Sikeston's tennis team opened the 2003 season with a 6-3 win over Dexter on Wednesday.

"The varsity had a great first match," said Sikeston coach Lynne DeWitt. "The girls played hard. We got the first match behind us, and now we know some things we need to work on."

In varsity singles, Elizabeth Killion blanked Dexter's Molly Jarrell 8-0 in the top spot.

"Elizabeth looked good," said DeWitt.

At No. 2, Lindsay Leible defeated Dexter's Claire Critchlow 8-3. In the third spot, Charlie Richey beat Dexter's Brittney Bagby 8-4. At No. 4, Jeri Nichols lost to Dexter's Summer Carter 5-8.

In the fifth spot, Chelsea Gilliland toppled Dexter's Briana Lacy 8-2, then Brittney Bohannon lost to Dexter's Megan Leist 4-8.

In varsity doubles, Killion and Richey defeated Carter and Bagby 8-2. Leible and Nichols defeated Jarrell and Critchlow 8-3, then Gilliland and Bohannon lost to Lacy and Leist 5-8.

Sikeston lost Wednesday's junior varsity match 0-9.

In junior varsity singles, Jessica Colwick lost to Dexter's Fallon Wicker 0-6. Emily Bowman lost to Dexter's Ashley Jackson 2-6. Lindsay James lost to Dexter's Claire Burleson 0-6.

Hallie Lambert lost to Dexter's Claire Kindren 1-6. Ellie Hensley lost to Dexter's Kristen Mick 5-7, then Brittney Bard was beat by Dexter's Jessica Lemmons 4-6.

In junior varsity doubles, Colwick and Bowman lost to Wicker and Jackson 1-6. James and Lambert lost to Kinchen and Horton 0-6, then Hensley and Bard lost to K. Bush and Pyle 4-6.

Sikeston's tennis team will be back in action today, hosting Caruthersville at 4 p.m.
