LEAWOOD, Kan. - Lois W. Hedrick, 85, formerly of Sikeston, died Oct. 7, 2003, in Overland Park.
Born June 5, 1918, in her home in Ocean, Md., daughter of the late Isabella and Thomas Williams, she spent her youth in Cresaptown, Md., until graduating in 1935 from the Allegany High School in Cumberland, Md. She received a bachelor of science degree in education in 1939 from Frostburg Teacher's College in Maryland and her master's in education in 1968 from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Lois was a lifetime educator who touched the lives of hundreds of children. Her philosophy of teaching was that every child had special talents which could be developed when given the appropriate learning opportunities. She taught at Lee Hunter Elementary School in Sikeston the last 16 years of her career before retiring in 1980.
Lois married Walter Hedrick on Oct. 10, 1942. They were blessed with three children. He survives of the home in Leawood.
Also surviving her are two daughters and one son-in-law, Suzanne Hedrick of Overland Park and Janet and James Hunter of Fairfax, Mo.; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Donna Hedrick of Sikeston; and eight grandchildren.
Lois especially enjoyed spending time with children and grandchildren, swimming, traveling with her husband and watching birds. She is fondly remembered as a person who always tried her best at any task she undertook and taught others to love through her deeds.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston where a memorial service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday. The Rev. William "Bill" Koch, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Sikeston, will officiate.
