BASEBALL
BELL CITY -- The Bell City Cubs improved to 6-2 on the year as freshman Nick Niemczyk tossed a complete game, allowing only one earned run while striking out five in a 7-4 victory over the Bloomfield Wildcats.
"It was a pretty good effort for a freshman in his second start," Bell City coach Matt Asher said. "He threw a complete game and besides one hanging curve ball, he had a really good game."
That one pitch was sent over the wall by John Monroe to lead off the fifth inning and pull the Wildcats within three runs, but it would be the last score of the contest.
The Cubs pounded out nine hits led by Niemczyk and another freshman Toby Heeb with a pair of hits each. Heeb had two RBIs.
"I was really pleased with the work of the freshmen today," Asher said. "Toby was filling in because (freshman D.D.) Gillespie was sick. The freshmen made contact and put the ball in play."
Bell City hosts Woodland Thursday at 4 p.m. as the Cubs look to go 3-0 in Stoddard County Activities Association play.
The Wildcats play at Bernie Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m.
