DEXTER - Edith Carter, 94, died Oct. 26, 2004, at the Crowley Ridge Care Center.
Born Jan. 17, 1910, at Ellsinore, daughter of the late Robert Freeman and Sarah Rhoda "Pink" Boyer Cates, she worked in the housekeeping department for Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bernie, where she was a Sunday school teacher.
On April 17, 1927, in Ellsinore, she married Joseph Loyd Carter who preceded her in death on Aug. 16, 2002.
Survivors include: two sons, Ivan Willis Carter of Bonne Terre and Sherman Loyd Carter of Bernie; two daughters, Leatha McElvoy of Springfield and Brenda Inis Collins of Essex; one sister, Ethel Kelly of Ellsinore; and 23 grandchildren and more than 100 great- grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Freeman Luke Carter; two daughters, Noami Dockins and Verna Roberts; and four brothers and one sister.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie, where services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Bill Garrett will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Bernie Cemetery.
